Is Your Data Safe?
Cyber Security & Backups Explained

Cyber threats are no longer something that only large companies need to worry about. Home users and small businesses across Anglesey are increasingly targeted by phishing emails, ransomware, and password theft — often simply because their defences are weaker than those of bigger organisations. The consequences of a successful attack can be devastating: years of photographs, financial records, and irreplaceable personal files can be lost or held to ransom in a matter of minutes.

The foundation of good cyber security is layered protection. Windows Defender — built into every modern Windows PC — is now a capable first line of defence, provided it is kept fully up to date. Beyond that, strong and unique passwords for every account are essential. Using the same password across multiple sites means a single data breach elsewhere can unlock your email, your bank, or your social media simultaneously. A password manager makes this practical without requiring you to memorise dozens of complex strings.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second layer that stops attackers even when they have your password. Enabling it on your email account in particular is one of the most impactful things you can do, since your inbox is the master key to every other account you own.

Backups, however, are your ultimate safety net — the one thing that makes every other problem recoverable. The golden rule is the 3-2-1 strategy: keep three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, with one stored offsite (such as cloud backup). If ransomware strikes and your files are encrypted, a tested backup means the attack becomes a nuisance rather than a catastrophe.

Neil's tip: A backup you've never tested is not a backup. We can set up and verify a reliable backup system for your home or business — so you know with confidence your data is protected.

Three Copies of Your Data

Your original files plus two separate backups — so a single failure never wipes everything out.

Two Different Storage Types

For example, an external hard drive and a cloud service — different media fail in different ways.

One Copy Offsite

Cloud backup or a drive kept elsewhere ensures fire, flood, or ransomware can't reach everything at once.

My PC Is Crawling —
Do I Need a New One?

A slow computer is one of the most common reasons people ring us — and the good news is that in the majority of cases, a full replacement is absolutely not necessary. Slow performance has a handful of well-understood causes, and most of them are surprisingly affordable to fix.

The single biggest upgrade you can make to a sluggish older machine is replacing a traditional spinning hard drive (HDD) with a solid-state drive (SSD). The difference is transformative. Boot times that used to take three to five minutes can drop to under 20 seconds. Applications open instantly. The PC you thought was past it suddenly feels new again. We carry out SSD upgrades regularly across Anglesey, and it's consistently the most cost-effective repair we offer.

Beyond hardware, software causes plenty of slowness too. Too many programmes set to launch at startup, cloud sync tools running constantly in the background, years of accumulated temporary files, and outdated drivers all add up. Using Windows' built-in Disk Cleanup utility, disabling unnecessary startup applications via Task Manager, and keeping your operating system fully updated can all make a measurable improvement without spending a penny.

One important note: Windows 10 loses its security support from Microsoft in October 2025. If you're still running it, now is the time to check whether your machine can handle Windows 11 — and if it can't, to discuss your options before that deadline arrives.

Neil's tip: Before you buy a new PC, let us take a look. In many cases an SSD upgrade plus a tune-up costs a fraction of a new machine and gives you several more years of reliable use.

Virus and malware infections remain one of the most common reasons people contact us, and the threats have become considerably more sophisticated in recent years. Ransomware — malicious software that encrypts your files and demands payment to restore them — has moved from targeting large corporations to hitting ordinary home users and small businesses. A single click on the wrong email attachment can be enough.

The damage can be severe: a ransomware attack on a small accounting firm can wipe years of client records within hours if backups aren't in place. This is why we always stress to our customers across Anglesey that regular, tested backups are non-negotiable. Cloud backup services and external hard drives both work — ideally, you should have both.

On the prevention side, keeping your system fully updated is the single most effective thing you can do. Security patches are released by Microsoft, browser makers, and software vendors on an almost daily basis, and each one closes a vulnerability that attackers could otherwise exploit. Windows' built-in Defender antivirus is now genuinely capable for most users — the days of needing a paid third-party suite are largely behind us, provided Defender is kept up to date and full weekly scans are run.

Windows 10 End of Life — October 2025

Microsoft will stop issuing security updates for Windows 10 in October 2025. Running an unsupported operating system after this date means any newly discovered security holes will remain permanently unpatched — leaving your data exposed. If your PC can't run Windows 11, now is the time to plan ahead. We can assess your machine and advise on your options.

When infection does occur, the priority is to disconnect from the internet immediately to stop any further spread or data exfiltration, then seek professional help. Attempting to remove sophisticated malware without the right tools can sometimes make things worse — or leave hidden remnants that re-infect the machine later. Our removal service uses up-to-date specialist tools and finishes with a full system health check so you can be confident the threat has been completely eliminated.

Neil's tip: If something looks suspicious — an unexpected pop-up, a programme you didn't install, or your browser homepage has changed without you doing anything — don't ignore it. The earlier an infection is caught, the simpler and cheaper it is to resolve.
